About the RSPB

Since its founding in 1889, the RSPB has grown into a wildlife conservation charity with more than a million members. It has offices across the UK and, since its successful first campaign to end the plumage trade, it has widened its sphere of influence to include a huge range of issues that affect wildlife and habitats.

The RSPB:

  • Works with decision makers on behalf of birds and the environment
  • Researches wildlife problems and promotes practical solutions
  • Protects, restores and manages important areas for wildlife across the UK
  • Works internationally through a global conservation partnership called BirdLife International
  • Shares expertise and knowledge to help young and old enjoy the natural world
  • Tackles wildlife crime and habitat loss
  • Works with landowners and farmers to help countryside birds
  • An elected Council and committees for Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales oversee our work. The Chief Executive reports to our Council. Divisional directors of Conservation, Finance, Human Resources, Public Affairs, Marketing, Scotland, International, Northern Ireland, Wales and the English regions form our Management Board.

  • 1,022,090 members including 137,903 youth members.
  • A staff of over 1,300 people and over 8,800 volunteers.
  • An income of over £50 million per year.
  • 176 nature reserves covering 121,082 hectares home to 80% of our rarest or most threatened bird species.
  • A UK headquarters, three national offices and nine regional offices.
  • A local network of 160 local groups and 130 youth groups.
  • Volunteers founded the RSPB over 110 years ago and remain a vitally important part of the organisation today; there are at least nine volunteers for every paid member of staff. Volunteers bring unique qualities to the RSPB that we wish to harness to extend our work and do a huge amount for our credibility. It adds to our range of skills, helps stretch our scarce resources and keeps us in touch with grass roots. We expect our people to encourage, develop and support volunteer involvement in our work.

The RSPB is a registered charity (number 207076) and its main sources of income are membership subscriptions and donations. By becoming a member of the RSPB you help to protect the future of wild birds and the environment, and you receive benefits including free entry to over 150 nature reserves throughout the UK, covering more than 240,000 acres and a copy of Birds magazine four times a year. Younger birders can join the Wildlife Explorers and take part in the activities of their local Wildlife Explorers group.

When you join the RSPB, you will get the greatest membership benefit of them all: knowing that you're helping to conserve our native wild birds and protect the environment.

What's more, you will receive regular, high quality magazines packed with information about birds and wildlife: Birds magazine for adults (quarterly), and for junior members, a magazine suited to their age group (one every two months).
Join the RSPB and help us secure the future for wild birds. You can buy membership for yourself or as a gift for someone else.
